Thorlabs' SHB1 diaphragm (leaf) optical beam shutter offers a Ø1" aperture in a compact, Ø2.25" (Ø57.2 mm), 0.38" (9.7 mm) thick housing. The five stainless steel blades open from the center of the aperture with open and close times of 10 ms and 9 ms, respectively. This patent-pending shutter can be operated with either manual or external control. The shutter can operate at continuous frequencies of up to 10 Hz and burst frequencies up to 15 Hz in the external modulation mode. During operation, the shutter remains in a closed position and then opens when a pulse control signal is applied by the included controller. As long as the control voltage to the shutter remains high, the shutter stays open, but once the voltage goes low, the shutter closes. Please see the Specs tab for a detailed timing diagram. Post Mounting Adapter Option
The SHM1(/M) is a compact Ø1/2" Post Mounting Adapter for our diaphragm shutters. It is equipped with an 8-32 (M4) tap for post mounting as well as four 4-40 tapped holes that provide compatibility with our 30 mm cage systems. The clear aperture of the adapter has internal SM1 threads, allowing Ø1" lens tubes to be attached to both sides of a shutter/adapter combination. A nylon-tipped 8-32 setscrew is used to secure the shutter in the adapter's double bore, which provides three points of contact. Alternatively, for vibration-sensitive applications, the shutter can be secured to the adapter with three 2-56 screws via the three through holes provided around the edge of the shutter housing.

Thorlabs' SHB1 diaphragm shutter with 5, stainless steel leaves offers a Ø1" aperture in a compact, Ø2.25" (Ø57.2 mm), 0.38" (9.7 mm) thick housing. One side of the aperture is internally SM1 (1.035"-40) threaded to easily interface with all of our SM1 lens tubes and other SM1-threaded components. For example, the shutter may be attached to our CCD or CMOS cameras using a SM1A9 C-Mount to SM1 adapter and SM1T2 lens tube coupler, as shown in the image at the top of the page. The SHM1 post mounting adapter (available below) also features SM1 threading and allows lens tubes to be attached to either side of the shutter. For custom mounting options, three Ø0.10" (Ø2.3 mm) through holes are provided around the edge of the housing that can accept #2 (M2) screws.

Shutter Controller
This shutter is provided with a controller offering either manual pushbutton control or control via an external +5 V TTL signal. In manual mode, simply pressing a button on the controller will open the shutter; pressing the button a second time closes it. A BNC input is provided for remote control of the shutter and integration into complex systems.

In the external mode, the shutter can operate continuously at frequencies of 10 Hz, and burst frequencies up to 15 Hz. A detailed timing diagram can be found on the Specs tab. Indicator LEDs are provided to indicate the shutter state, and an interlock connection is provided to allow other equipment to be shut down when an error is detected.

The SHM1 Post Mounting Adapter is designed to make our SHB1 diaphragm shutter compatible with both Ø1/2" posts, 30 mm cage systems and SM1 Lens Tubes. The adapter features a double bore that accepts the outer diameter of the shutter, with a notch that allows the controller cord to pass freely, as shown in the photograph to the right. The top of the adapter has an 8-32 nylon-tipped setscrew for mounting with three points of contact. Alternately, the shutter can be secured using the three tapped holes in the face of the adapter with 2-56 screws (not included); this is ideal for vibration-sensitive applications. 

 A Ø1/2" post can be attached to the bottom of the adapter using the 8-32 (M4) tapped hole. In addition, the face of the adapter also features four, 4-40 tapped holes for attaching a 30 mm cage system. The clear aperture of the adapter has internal SM1 threads, which allows lens tubes to be attached to both sides of a shutter/adapter combination.
